Matthijs de Ligt says that the level Manchester United are currently performing at is not befitting the history or status of the club.
Despite having many chances, Ruben Amorim's team fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday, with frustration the main emotion to come out of the game.
United had good spells in the match but could not find the net and, after James Maddison's earlier finish, it was Ange Postecoglou's side who took all three points away from the encounter.
Speaking after the match to MUTV, de Ligt explained what the Reds were lacking on the day, and in several games this term.
“I think in the end, finishing the chances is a big thing in football and we were unlucky we couldn't finish them today,”
he said.
“If you lose, a lot has to improve. We are not where United belongs and if I knew the solution I would have said it and we would win games but a lot needs to improve and we have to look to ourselves to be responsible.
”We have to stick together because if we are out there on our own, we would never get results.“
The togetherness Matthijs refers to has been apparent in 2024/25, for example when the Reds dug deep to beat Arsenal away in the Emirates FA Cup on penalties, despite being down to 10 men.
De Ligt hopes that the hard work he and his team-mates do on the training ground with Amorim and his staff will bear fruit sooner rather than later.
“It is not enough for United. We are not winning enough or scoring enough chances. We are conceding too many goals,”
he added.
“There are a lot of things we need to improve and hopefully it will get better soon.”
