Who was United's Man of the Match v Leicester City?

Friday 07 February 2025 23:28

Manchester United recorded another climactic Emirates FA Cup victory, coming back from a goal behind against Leicester City to win 2-1 at Old Trafford.

As with any stoppage-time comeback win, the game was littered with heroics from the Reds in the second half to ensure we live to fight another day in the competition.

Goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Harry Maguire cancelled out Bobby De-Cordova Reid's first-half opener, ensuring our name is in the hat for the fifth-round draw.

It was a strong team fightback, but who stood out from the rest? Your votes are in, see the results below...

Taking a notable 48 per cent of the fan vote was half-time substitute Alejandro Garnacho, who changed the game when he replaced United debutant Patrick Dorgu.

There had been lulls in the first 45 minutes, compounded by the Foxes' goal late in the half, but there was no chance of a dip in energy with the Argentina international on the pitch. He looked to get forward at every available opportunity and would have notched the equaliser himself but for a dramatic goal-line clearance by Caleb Okoli.

But it was of little consequence to the determined Garna. Minutes later, he charged back down the same left wing and found Rasmus Hojlund in the centre, whose blocked shot fell into the path of Joshua Zirkzee to level the game.

The difference our no.17 made was palpable, making him a deserving winner of our Man of the Match award.

Finishing in a strong second place was, of course, Harry Maguire, scorer of the stoppage-time winner, who claimed 26 per cent of the fan poll.

He rose from the pack at the back post to meet an inch-perfect Bruno Fernandes set-piece delivery, rooting Mads Hermansen to the spot as he notched the all-important goal.

So often Maguire has been the man there for the Reds in a time of need, and tonight was no different, as he wheeled away to celebrate in front of an adoring Stretford End.

Both Fernandes (eight per cent) and Zirkzee (seven per cent) did well in the vote, but it was always going to be difficult to win out against contributions like that of Garnacho and Maguire.

Congratulations, Garna! Thank you to all those who voted.
