Track Record: Mejia signed out of the Dominican Republic as part of the same class as current Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, but has been brought along slowly. He reached Double-A for the first time in 2023. Mejia broke out in the Arizona Fall League, where he struck out 16 batters over 8.1 innings. Mejia was added to Colorado’s 40-man roster in the offseason.
Scouting Report: Mejia is primarily a two-pitch reliever with power stuff and fringy command. His four-seam fastball sits between 95-97 mph and features heavy cut life. The pitch is an above-average bat-misser pitch that generates whiffs in the zone. His most-thrown secondary is a mid-80s sweeper with an average of between 15-16 inches of horizontal break. Mejia’s slider consistently stymied hitters in 2023, when it generated a high rate of chases. Mejia also shows a firm changeup but it’s rarely used. Mejia shows below-average command of his fastball but has a good feel for his sweeper.
The Future: Mejia is a two-pitch middle reliever who could contribute for the Rockies in 2024.
