Age At Draft: 18.8
BA Grade:55/Extreme
Tools:Hit: 55. Power: 45. Run: 70. Field: 55. Arm: 55.
Farmelo is a well-rounded, lefthanded-hitting outfielder who continued to grow on scouts throughout the summer and fall thanks to his hitting ability and solid set of tools. Listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Farmelo is well-built with a lean and athletic frame and has a smooth and slightly uphill lefthanded swing that starts with a quick toe-tap. He manages his at-bats well, makes plenty of contact and tracks the ball well out of the pitcher’s hand with strong balance and minimal movement in his load. His pitch recognition, ability to handle velocity, bat speed and pure contact ability indicate potential above-average hitting ability and he should have solid power as well, even if he’s more of a gap hitter than a true slugger. His swing currently seems optimized for hard hit line drives and ground balls, but he’ll occasionally showcase solid raw power in batting practice and seems to consistently put the barrel on the ball in games. He’s a plus-plus runner who clocked a 6.36-second 60-yard dash in 2022 at the East Coast Pro, and he gets out of the box in a flash, with consistent 70-grade home-to-first times. Farmelo has all the tools to be an above-average defender in center field, with great range and above-average arm strength as well. He has taken balls at shortstop this spring with Westfield High, but his actions in the dirt make it clear his future is in the grass. He could be a tough sign out of a Virginia commitment, but is getting top-50 pick buzz.

BA Grade: 55/Extreme
Track Record: Farmelo emerged as one of the 2023 draft’s toolsiest players with a standout showing at East Coast Pro. He solidified himself as a potential first-round pick in the spring, headlined by a strong showing against prep righthander Bryce Eldridge in a marquee in-state showdown. The Mariners drafted Farmelo 29th overall, using the Prospect Promotion Incentive pick earned from Julio Rodriguez’s Rookie of the Year season in 2022, and signed him for an above-slot $3.2 million. Farmelo’s pro debut was delayed by a concussion, but he joined Low-A Modesto for the California League playoffs and helped lead the Nuts to a title. He hit a tie-breaking, three-run homer in Game 1 of the championship series.
Scouting Report: Farmelo is built like a linebacker with a physical, 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame and has the strength and athleticism to match. He flashes plus raw power from the left side and flies around the field with plus-plus speed and a powerful gait. Farmelo’s power-speed combination is tantalizing, but he’s raw as a hitter. He has a funky, unconventional setup and gets happy feet in the box, negatively affecting his timing. He has plenty of bat speed and is short to the ball, but his swing is rigid with limited adjustability. Farmelo shows a pure swing when he’s on time and is geared to drive balls the opposite way to left-center field. He projects to be a fringe-average hitter with 20-plus homer potential if he can iron out his swing and setup. Farmelo is a plus defender in center field with solid instincts and outstanding jumps on top of his speed. He has average arm strength and has flashed higher.
The Future: Farmelo has the tools to be an everyday center fielder who goes 20-20, but he needs time to develop as a hitter. He’ll open 2024 back at Modesto.
