View Draft Report
One of the fastest players in the 2019 class, Brown is an 80-grade runner who routinely posts sub 4.1-second home-to-first times from the righthanded batter’s box. With centerfield athleticism and instincts, Brown has tremendous upside as a defender in the middle of the outfield, tracking balls well with dynamic athleticism that will allow him to make plays other outfielders wouldn’t dream of getting to. Brown has average raw arm strength, but he needs to improve his throwing accuracy. Offensively, Brown is incredibly raw, and scouts believe he would be a two-year Rookie-ball player who you would need to teach how to hit. He has some bat-to-ball skills that he showed off with the Canadian national team against pro competition this spring, but he’s mostly a fastball hitter who has a line-drive approach and rarely elevates the ball. When he does, it’s with little impact ability as Brown has well below-average raw power in his 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. A Texas A&M commit, Brown could be a player who teams prefer to see go to school, develop physically and prove he can hit. But if he does figure out the offensive game and takes the next steps, he has exciting upside and is one of the more impressive athletes in the class.

BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme
Track Record: Brown, an Ontario native, signed with the Blue Jays to an above-slot $800,000 bonus as the 88th overall pick in the 2019 draft. He began his pro career as a 17-year-old in the Gulf Coast League. Following the 2020 pandemic Brown was assigned to Low-A Dunedin. He was once again assigned to Dunedin to begin 2022, but found his footing and hit .279/.369/.450 over 38 games before seeing promotion to High-A Vancouver.
Scouting Report: There are few profiles in the amateur space more fraught with fool's gold than a tooled up, righthanded hitting prep outfielder from cold weather climates, but Brown took a sizable step forward in 2022 and solidified his prospect pedigree. A top-of-the-scale athlete, Brown is a 70-grade runner with explosiveness in everything he does. He uses a simple, hands-driven righthanded swing that utilizes little of his lower half and relies on his bat speed and quick twitch mechanisms. He's a below-average contact hitter with average approach and shows the ability to identify balls and strikes. While his power is below-average at present he projects to add more strength as he matures. His bat path is fairly level, but he showed the ability to barrel up on his best struck drives. Offensively Brown is work in progress but one that made strides at the plate in 2022. He's a double-plus runner who uses his speed most effectively in the field. Defensively he's one of the better center fielders in A-ball and showed gap-closing speed and precision in his route running.
The Future: A standout center fielder who got an early start on his professional career. Brown will be 21 for all of 2023 and should return to High-A Vancouver to begin his season. He has potential for an everyday regular in center with gold glove defense.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 45. Power: 45. Run: 70. Field: 70. Arm: 60. -
TRACK RECORD: The Blue Jays drafted Brown with the 88th overall pick in 2019, making him the first Canadian player selected that year. Brown was raw coming out of high school and young for the class at 17 on draft day. The lack of development time with the canceled 2020 minor league season was evident to scouts when Brown arrived at instructional league in the fall.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brown is the best athlete in the Blue Jays' system and one of the fastest players in professional baseball. He's an explosive runner with a light, gliding gait and 80-grade speed on the 20-to- 80 scouting scale. That speed, along with his solid instincts, gives him the attributes to develop into a plus or better defender in center field. Brown has an average arm, but he's working to improve his arm action and exchange to be more efficient. Brown is still crude as a hitter. He has plenty of bat speed to handle good velocity, and that bat speed gives him a chance to drive the ball with impact in the future despite his wiry build, but his pitch recognition, swing path, timing and contact skills all lag behind. Once he learns to read pitchers and get better jumps, he should pile up stolen bases.
THE FUTURE: The lost season hurt Brown's development more than most, but he's still an electric athlete and only 19. He probably starts 2021 in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. -
TRACK RECORD: Brown was the first Canadian player selected in the 2019 draft, with the Blue Jays picking him at No. 88 overall and signing him for $797,500. Brown was one of the youngest players in the class, only turning 18 after his first season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League ended.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brown is bursting with quick-twitch, explosive athleticism, with a large gap between his physical potential and the rawness of his baseball skills. He's an 80 runner on the 20-80 scouting scale, with the instincts and average arm strength that give him the tools to develop into a plus or better defender in center field with plenty of range and closing speed. Those wheels should also make him a high stolen base threat once he improves his technique and ability to read pitchers. As a hitter, Brown has excellent bat speed, enabling him to catch up to good velocity even when it's in on his body, and he puts himself into good hitting positions, but his feel for hitting and timing are still raw, especially when it comes to adjusting to offspeed pitches. Brown doesn't have much in-game power right now, but for a long, slender player, he shows surprising ability to drive the ball with impact in BP because of his bat speed.
THE FUTURE: Given his youth and present hitting ability, Brown will likely head to either Rookie-level Bluefield or short-season Vancouver in 2020.

Brown was the first Canadian player drafted in 2019, going to the Blue Jays in the 3rd round with the 88th overall pick and signing for $797,500. He was also one of the youngest players drafted, playing all season as a 17-year-old before turning 18 in September. Brown is an outstanding athlete and an 80 runner on the 20-to-80 scouting scale. Between his blazing speed, instincts and average arm strength, Brown has the tools to be a plus or better defender at a premium position. Once he learns better stolen base technique, he should be a prolific basestealer as well. While Brown's athletic ability is exciting, his hitting skills are still relatively undeveloped. His fast hands generate quick bat speed, but his contact rate is an issue, especially against soft stuff, and his power at this point is minimal. Brown is a candidate to spend another year in a short-season league next season, where he would still be one of the younger players in the league.
