Roupp doesn’t jump out at you in terms of pure stuff, but he’s been nothing but a consistent starter for UNC Wilmington over his four-year career and after posting a 2.58 ERA this spring, has a career ERA of 2.99. He fills up the strike zone with a three-pitch mix that features a fastball in the 89-91 mph range that tops out at 94, a mid-70s curveball with 11-to-5 shape and mostly top-down action and an infrequently used changeup in the low 80s that he always lands down and away to his glove side. Scouts don’t see any pitch that’s plus in Roupp’s repertoire and everything might be more fringe-average than average, but he throws strikes and has always performed. Roupp is listed at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and has a starter’s look, with a clean arm action that features some plunge in the back but a balanced finish and consistent release point.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Roupp spent four years at UNC Wilmington and mixed in a stint in the Cape Cod League as well. San Francisco took a flier on him in the 12th round in 2021, then watched as he racked up 152 strikeouts in his first full season as a pro. Roupp missed roughly half the season with a lower back injury but was healthy enough to pitch during instructional league.
Scouting Report: Roupp works primarily with two pitches: a sinker at around 93 mph and a high-70s curveball with two-plane break. The curveball is particularly nasty and grades as the best of its kind in the system. It got whiffs at a 48% clip and was thrown for a strike nearly 70% of the time. The sinker and curveball are the bulk of Roupp’s mix, but he will also mix in a below-average slider and changeup. Neither pitch was thrown more than 4% of the time. To become a strong rotation candidate, he’ll need to develop at least one of those pitches into a usable third option. He has above-average control as well, and threw strikes for both quality and volume at Double-A.
The Future: More than anything, Roupp needs to stay healthy. He has a forearm strain and a back injury on his record already. After that, he’ll need to find a quality third pitch. If he checks those boxes, he might wind up in the back of a rotation.

Track Record: Roupp was a standout starter in four seasons with UNC-Wilmington and showed he could handle better competition with a strong stint with Wareham of the Cape Cod League. The Giants drafted him in the 12th round in 2021 and signed him for a below-slot $75,000. Roupp made his full-season debut in 2022 and zoomed three levels from Low-A to Double-A, finishing third in the organization with 152 strikeouts.
Scouting Report: Roupp throws his curveball more often than other pitcher in the minors, and with good reason. The pitch is a potentially plus weapon with more than 3,000 rpms of spin and vicious two-plane break and depth. He gets frequent chases and swings and misses on the pitch and can dominate with it alone. Roupp backs up his curveball with a two-seam fastball that averages 93 mph with excellent sinking and tailing life. He rounds out his mix with a low-80s slider and an infrequently used mid-80s changeup that are both fringy to below-average. Roupp's lower release height accentuates his arsenal and adds an element of deception. He gets ground balls by the bunch and throws strikes with above-average control.
The Future: Roupp is likely to return to Double-A to begin 2023. He has a chance to be a back-end starter if his slider or changeup develop. If not, his sinker and curveball combination will fit in the bullpen.

Roupp entered the year as a late day two or early day three prospect after his first two years with UNC-Wilmington. A 6-foot-3, 205-pound righthander, Roupp established himself as a reliable piece in the starting rotation and bullpen in 2018 and 2019. A full-time starter as a freshman, Roupp posted a 3.58 ERA over 50.1 innings and 15 starts—which tied an Eagles freshman record for starts. In 2019 as a sophomore Roupp split time between the pen and the rotation, again posting a solid 3.47 ERA but this time with 80.1 innings of work. Roupp was off to his best season yet in 2020, posting a 2.67 ERA through four starts and 27 innings, with a league-leading 30 strikeouts and a career-low walk rate (2.3 per nine). Roupp’s stuff is ordinary. He pitches in the 89-93 mph range with his fastball and shows a solid low-to-mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup. He profiles as a swingman starter type at the next level.
